Note from the Teacher

Field Day was AWESOME!  Everyone was winner!  Sportsmanship and fun are number one!  My compliments to my class for their excellent sportsmanship!  It was wonderful to have so many parents and grandparents for our Field Day.  Thanks for all of your support!  Thanks also to the room moms for the ice cream treats!

Happy Mother's Day to all of our moms!  I hope that you enjoy the special gifts that your children have lovingly made for you.  Also, please enjoy their sweet reflections on the cards that they made.  These memories will be with you always!

Every two weeks we will have a Scholar Dollar Store, during which time children can purchase small items.  They love earning Scholar Dollars!  We had our last Scholar Dollar Store Friday, May 2nd.   The next one will be May 16th .  Thanks again for your donations, and for the moms who have signed up to help with it.  It would be so greatly appreciated if you could send in small items for the store.  Items like pencil sharpeners, decorative erasers, "fancy" pencils, little cars, jewelry, small toys (cars, balls), etc. are great!   (***Again, many thanks to all of you who have sent in items for the store.***)

Again, the race for space is on!    Seventeen students have their astronauts, and six are already in outer space!  There is only JUST A LITTLE MORE THAN ONE WEEK LEFT IN THE GRADING PERIOD.   Most of the class met their AR goals for the 5th 6 week term.  Congratulations to all of those students who have met their AR goals for all 5 of the 6 week terms.  They were recognized at the April 24th PTO meeting.  I cannot stress the importance of staying on top of AR from the 1st week in the term.  Students should plan to take at least 2 tests per week.  Please encourage your student to read an AR book each night, or the reading selection.  I WOULD LIKE TO ENCOURAGE MORE READING OF CHAPTER BOOKS.  MANY STUDENTS ARE ALREADY DOING THIS.  Once goals are met, I want them to choose books that they are interested in, but perhaps have not had an opportunity to read, even if they are not their reading levels.  I want them to enjoy reading!!!     New goals have been set.  You should have received a note so that you can be aware of the goal that your student has committed to for the term.  Please encourage your child to stay within the set reading level.  This should result in successful AR points.   Your child should feel free to borrow books from our classroom library to read in school.  Thanks to all of my students for turning in their JAE library books on time!!!

Also, please stay on top of AM.  The goal for this six-week term is 127 objectives.  There are 127 objectives for second grade.   We now have five students who have completed the 2nd grade AM Library!!!  A-W-E-S-O-M-E!!!  Several more are close!

******I am still in need of some help in the classroom to cut, paste, and laminate!  Please let me know if you have time to share!******

******We also need more wet wipes, not disinfecting wipes and tissues!******

Thank you for all that you do to help your child be a success!

     Warmest regards,

     Mrs. Huey

Weekly Assignments

***Reading and Language:

We have completed all reading selections!  This week we will be taking the Unit 6 test, and reading plays and poems.  Please remember to sign the nightly reading homework log.  Please allow your child to read to you for 15 minutes and write a sentence about what was read.  I am asking for a good sentence of at least 5 words, with a capital letter to start the sentence, and a period at the end.  We have talked about this thoroughly, and they should be able to do this well.  I will check this each morning. The more they practice reading, the stronger readers they will become!   Each day we do Daily Language Review. We will have a test from the DLR this week, from Lesson 35.   Your child should bring home his or her DLR pages to study.

***Spelling:

The spelling unit this week is a review unit

                      Challenge:    (no challenge words)

Please find the list and reading log in the red take-home folder.

***Math:

We have completed the Saxon Math Curriculum.  We will spend some time reviewing skills such as regrouping, fractions, and multiplication.  Please continue to review facts with your child (addition, subtraction, and multiplication).  I have stressed to the children that it takes practice to increase speed and accuracy.  Please take a few moments while driving or waiting in line somewhere to review.  Accelerated Math: Please encourage your child to work on AM.  There are 127 second grade objectives.  Five of our students have completed all 127 of the 2nd Grade AM objectives.  WOW!!!   Students will be encouraged to bring AM home to review with parents.  We will have some class time to work on it, hopefully each day.  It will be due on Thursday morning.  You will receive a report in the Monday Folder each week.  Please encourage your child to turn these in when completed.  I will scan them and return them the next day so that they can "get to the rodeo!"  (The AM theme will be "Getting to the Rodeo!"  Your child's cowboy or cowgirl will advance toward the rodeo with each ten objectives mastered.)

***Social Studies:  Our next unit will be People at Work (Goods & Services; Producers & Consumers).

***Science:  We are studying Matter and Energy.
