Notes from Mr. Coker                                                 UPDATED 2-25-08      5:00 PM

Many Thanks

I'm sorry that it has been awhile since I updated the webpage. Since the cancer diagnosis I've really focused a lot on myself and the changes that this has brought to my family's life. I thank you sincerely for all the cards and prayers that you have sent my way. I feel better some days than others and try to find ways to cope with the symtoms the cancer brings and the side effects that the treatments cause. One of the side effects that began last week is the loss of my hair. Though not very noticeable yet, it's here. I don't know how bald I'll become. It's bothering my wife more than me. I've bumped into several of you at school and appreciated your concern for me. I'm going to use the webpage to help keep you better informed about me and things in the classroom.

THIRD GRADE COAT POLICY

Ah, winter is finally here; well it's here some days more than others. Please make sure your child is wearing appropriate outerwear. We do go outside for recess even on the cold days. If your child is deemed underdressed for the weather conditions then they may find themselves in the office while the rest of the class is outside for recess. I do not want children to get sick, so check the weather forecast and dress appropriately.

Multiplication

Multiplication is a vital math skill. Please begin working with your child to memorize the multiplication facts. We have worked on the 0's, 1's, 2's, 3's, 4's, 5's, 7's and 10's. It is important that students work daily on these essential math facts. If students do not have a strong command of their multiplication facts, then division will be difficult for them. There are several places online that you can play games and download math practice sheets. I have placed some links in the learning sites section of this webpage. My goal is for students to be able to complete 100 facts within 4 minutes. We have already talked about a reward for the students that are able to do their facts. ICE CREAM SUNDAE PARTY!!

Accelerated Math Policy Revision

In order to make better use of time in the classroom, students will now be required to have one card scan in by Tuesday recess and a second in by Thursday recess. Students not having their scans will complete the assignments during recess. I am generous with time in class for this to be finished, but several students are choosing not to do Accelerated Math.

WATER BOTTLES

Students may bring bottled water to class. Not flavored water, not sports water, just plain bottled water. This way any spills will not create a spot on the carpet. Students will not be allowed to refill bottles so leave the refillable bottles at home. This will help keep the refrigerator sanitary. They should mark their bottle before placing in the refrigerator. No huge bottles please so everything will fit in the refrigerator. As long as this does not create distractions, extra restroom visits, and all guidelines are followed, I think it will work.

SNACKS

I really don't like the idea of snacks mainly because of the carpet, but there are many students seeming famished by lunch time. Some are saying that they had no breakfast. Shame on those parents. We will have a small snack time from 10:30 to 10:40. This is a snack and not a meal. Snacks must be healthy (NO SUGAR, CHOCOLATE, or CHIPS) Some recommendations are fruit or string cheese. NOTHING THAT CREATES CRUMBS. If we can meet these constraints and work during the snack time I'll continue this privilege.

Any money coming to school should be in an envelope with child's name, what money is for, and teacher's name.
