Parents,
Your child’s safety is my first priority as your principal. Due to parents and staff sharing numerous concerns over dismissal safety, I formed a Dismissal Advisory Committee to examine our practices and to look for ways to streamline and expedite the process. I cannot thank you enough to the numerous parents and staff members who shared ideas and input via email. I am impressed with this community’s commitment to working together.
After making site visits to other campuses and considering numerous carline dismissal methods, the committee made the decision to go with a plan that required the least amount of change that also met our goals of increasing safety and expediting the process for parents. Madison Creek Elementary has the same building floor plan as JAE; therefore it made the most sense to replicate their dismissal procedures, which have been proven to be highly effective.
These are the highlights of the new carline dismissal plan that will go into effect on Thursday afternoon:
- We are extending the loading zone from the edge of building all the way to the end of the parking area exit.
- We are adding an additional loading lane to the front of the school. Cars will circle single-file around the back of the school using the right lane until you turn into the front of the school. Then you will split into two lanes for loading.
- 35-40 cars will load at once, then the next 35-40 cars will move into position and we will repeat this process until all car riders are dismissed.
- Parents are asked when they pull into the loading zone to turn off their engine and to discontinue cell phone usage.
- Students will walk in a line the entire length of the sidewalk loading as they see their car. A teacher per grade level (6 total) will walk with kids reminding students to load when they see their car.
- Parents remain in cars. When all cars are loaded, parents will be signaled to move.
- 5 staff members will be in the middle in between cars to ensure safety. They will be holding a red sign telling cars to stop for loading "Stop. Park. Phones Off" and a green sign to tell cars they may "Go, Proceed with Caution” when students are loaded and the line is ready to move.
- When cars move, students step off the side walk into the grass for safety.
- After cars move and new cars are in position, students will "about face" and walk back the entire length of the carline. They will load when they see their parents as they pass by in the opposite direction. Students will walk back the entire length of the sidewalk and turn by the A hallway and wait for cars to move.
- We anticipate 4 or 5 passes by cars/loading and carline will be finished.
- We are asking that parents no longer park and walk up. No other school in Sumner County allows this practice and we do not have staff available to make this process safe for your child. This was the most unsafe procedure that we had in place and we feel that the speed of the carline will meet the needs of parents who have appointments. Additionally, by having double lanes the front parking area will be completely blocked.
- We are asking parents to write the grade level on their green sign in their car window with their child’s name. This way if a child passes by the car and doesn’t see you, we can radio for that child.
- The first entrance to Shutes Lane will be blocked off as an exit only. All cars will enter from the second entrance.
- The Buses will use the outside (left) lane and cars will use the inside (right) lane. This will eliminate the need for bus traffic to cross in the back of the school. Cars will be single lane until they turn in the front of the school- double lanes will only be in the front of the school.
- Inclement weather plan - all car riders will be held inside the front foyer and called via radio to load. Parents stay in their cars and we bring the students to you loading 35-40 cars at a time. We encourage students to use raincoats and umbrellas.
The Dismissal Advisory Committee was committed to adopt a dismissal plan that we felt is in the best interest of our students and families. We will be revisiting dismissal procedures throughout the year to look for ways to improve the process for next year. Thank you for working with us to make this plan successful! We encourage parents to consider utilizing the bus services that are available for every student. A new “Peaceful School Bus” program is in place this year on our buses. As a reminder, Thursday is kindergarten’s first full day, and we ask your patience as we load them into cars for the first time. J
